چکیده

Vicariance hypotheses of Gondwanan fragmentation have been the prevailing explanation for the distributions of plant and animal taxa in the Southern Hemisphere since the widespread acceptance of plate tectonics in the late, 1960s (Bauer, 1993; Sanmartı́n & Ronquist, 2004). Recently, several molecular studies comparing the timing of cladogenic and vicariant Conservation Biology Graduate Program, Bell Museum of Natural History, University of Minnesota, St Paul, MN 55108, USA, Department of Biology, Villanova University, 800 Lancaster Avenue, Villanova, PA 19085, USA

Molecular claims of Gondwanan age for Australian agamid lizards are untenable.

A recent mtDNA study proposes a surprisingly deep (approximately 150 MYA) divergence between SE Asian and Australasian agamid lizards, consistent with ancient Gondwanan vicariance rather than dispersal across the Indonesian Archipelago. However, the analysis contains a fundamental error: use of rates of molecular evolution inferred from uncorrected sequence divergence to put a time frame on a t...

Dispersal largely explains the Gondwanan distribution of the ancient tropical clusioid plant clade.

PREMISE OF THE STUDY The clusioid clade (Malpighiales) has an ancient fossil record (∼90 Ma) and extant representatives exhibit a pantropical distribution represented on all former Gondwanan landmasses (Africa, Australia, India, Madagascar, and South America) except Antarctica. Several biogeographers have hypothesized that the clusioid distribution is an example of Gondwanan vicariance. Our aim...

Vicariant origin of malagasy reptiles supports late cretaceous antarctic land bridge.

Since the acceptance of Wegener's theory of plate tectonics in the 1960s, continental drift vicariance has been proposed as an explanation for pan-Gondwanan faunal distributions. Given the recognition of historical connections among continents, it no longer was necessary to invoke hypotheses of dispersal across nearly insurmountable barriers. The application of continental drift vicariance theo...

Molecular and fossil evidence place the origin of cichlid fishes long after Gondwanan rifting

Cichlid fishes are a key model system in the study of adaptive radiation, speciation and evolutionary developmental biology. More than 1600 cichlid species inhabit freshwater and marginal marine environments across several southern landmasses. This distributional pattern, combined with parallels between cichlid phylogeny and sequences of Mesozoic continental rifting, has led to the widely accep...

Back to Gondwanaland: can ancient vicariance explain (some) Indian Ocean disjunct plant distributions?

Oceans, or other wide expanses of inhospitable environment, interrupt present day distributions of many plant groups. Using molecular dating techniques, generally incorporating fossil evidence, we can estimate when such distributions originated. Numerous dating analyses have recently precipitated a paradigm shift in the general explanations for the phenomenon, away from older geological causes,...
